Gosport War Memorial Hospital opened on 28th May 1923 as a permanent memorial to the men and women of Gosport and the men of the Royal Marines Light Infantry who fought and gave their lives in the First World War.
The League of Friends of Gosport War Memorial Hospital (charity number 271258) was formed in1952 by a small group of eight local people wanting to play some part in assisting the running of the hospital.
Today the League has about 200 members working with the principal aim to provide funds to supplement the provisions of the N.H.S. in order to improve the conditions and comfort for the patients and to give extra equipment and resources to the staff.
In 2002 the League celebrated it’s Golden Jubilee and its Jubilee Appeal raised £50,000 for the enlargement and upgrading of the popular Drakes Diner – used by patients, staff, visitors and the public. The Diner has now been renamed Mary's Diner is memory of Miss Mary Tyrrell, MBE, JP who died in 2013 and had been the League Secretary for 52 years.
Since it’s initial inauguration the league has raise over a million pounds.
